Today’s prompt was to write a poem that includes a line that we are afraid to write. There are many ways that I could respond to that idea, and this is what I came up with this morning. It starts out kind of depressing, but I have hope that I can be honest and work through fear, so the poem ends on a more optimistic note.
I fear to reveal the sham that I am,
The elaborate mansion built on sand,
I seek connection but fear rejection,
So I retreat in self-protection
Which itself is fake,
For it leads to more pain than I can take,
Distrust, worry, isolation,
Loneliness become abrasions
On the heart and soul,
So through fear I’ll follow honesty’s pull.
