Black Coffee

Today I decided not to do the prompt, which was a poem using phrases found in the index of a book, but of course I still wrote a poem! I decided to try the theme from yesterday again, describing something and ending with a more abstract line.

I spoon the fine, sand-like grounds

Into a thin white paper filter,

The water in the reservoir, clear, plenty,

I press the button “Brew Now,” obediently

It goes, through the filter, into the clear pot,

Becoming deep brown bitter liquid

In my painted porcelain cup,

Bitter but beautiful, not woeful, wonderful,

Because I need to wake up.
