Water Under the Bridge?

For the final prompt in the Imaginary Garden, we are revisiting some of the best prompts throughout the years. I chose to write (again) to Sanaa’s prompt about water.

All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.

– Toni Morrison

If all water has a perfect memory,

And my body is 75% water,

Is my memory 75% perfect,

And 25% unsure?

My memory, gaslit,

Is imperfect yet legitimate:

My body remembers

What the mind can’t fathom

In depths of horror.

Is it water under the bridge?

Is it running through 75%

Of the same rivulets,

Memory trying to be made pure?

  1. This is a thought-provoking poem, likening memory to water. I resonate with the body remembering what the mind cant fathom. So true. I once passed the spot on the highway where I had had a serious car accident, and my body remembered the location. I love the quote about water that inspired this poem.

  2. Yes, it is interesting to think about water and the body and the rest. I only learned the term gaslighting in recent years and it has opened me to up to new understandings for sure. 25% unsure seems like a lot. Happy New Year!

  3. My goodness this is so incredibly deep, and beautiful in its imagery and depth! ❤️ I love the idea of; “Memory trying to be made pure?” 🙂

  4. My body remembers what I pray my mind never recalls. This speaks profoundly to me of my childhood abuse. You have spoken what I have been searching to speak.
