The Spider and the Fly

It seems that Rumi’s “Guest House” poem has continued to follow me, since it is now our inspiration for DVerse Poetics today: the art of being human! This poem was also inspired by FOWC: Upside and “What do You Have to Lose?”

This being human is a spider’s web:
Infinite criss-crosses, and we
Get stuck in past pains and losses.

This being human is deciding
When and whether to be the spider
Or the fly, we are both sometimes —

What’s true can be seen from many
Perspectives — what is there to lose
From choosing the upside? Remember

The spider, the fly, the web on which human lives lie.

  1. Gorgeously done, Jenna! I love; “This being human is deciding when and whether to be the spider
or the fly, we are both sometimes.”💝💝

  2. A brilliant opening stanza, Jenna, with the metaphor firmly conveyed and the genius internal rhyme of ‘criss-crosses/losses’. Yes, that’s being human. And then the subtle shift to ‘deciding when and whether to be the spider or the fly’ and the idea that we can be both!
