When I Think Of Future Plans….

A haibun inspired by Frank’s challenge about crickets, and the last FDDA, about plans for September. I will miss FDDA, but I’m always grateful for FOWC. I’ve also been trying to respond to other prompts, but this is the best one that I wrote today.

Tomorrow begins September. There are no particular plans, but I hope for more time with friends and being able to actually enter the church again. There were no plans for August, either, other than my friends’ live-streamed wedding on the 1st, but the month was better than expected. I’ll take September one day at a time. Too much thinking and I’ll start sinking in anxieties. As always, I’ll be hunting for the silver lining.

in silence a sound:
August chirping a goodbye —
crickets out of sight

A Positive Addition

This cherita is for FDDA day 30, about our best job, and FOWC: Covered. I am also linking with today’s Writers’ Pantry.

I am covered with love, even in the memories

Of my old job, children running to hug me
Even if they hated practicing math.

Before COVID divided people from each other,
It subtracted my job, but I hope that “my kids”
Will remember me positively, even if time multiplies.

An old photo yet still good for this post

Fun Facts!

This is a day late for FDDA #24 but also fits today’s FOWC: Somewhere. A sevenling seemed appropriate for this topic. I appreciate the “fun fact” prompt because I call any random fact, especially if it’s not fun, a “fun fact.”

I am a twin, younger by
17 minutes: My brother loves
Gardening, but I have none of that talent.

I love music, such as piano
And singing: Also always loved
Dancing, although I’m bad at it.

Somewhere there’s a place for this unique mix!

More Than a Hobby

The prompt for FDDA day 22 is “why writing matters to you.” In addition to writing poetry for this blog (and many other poems that will never see the light of day), I write daily in a journal and have done that on and off since I was 5. In my first journal entry, I wrote the Ys backwards, so I’ve basically been writing since before I could write! This poem is a Diamante about why I write.

Journal:

precious, detailed

remembering, preserving, keeping

record, memory, expression, connection

sharing, experimenting, opening

creative, honest —

Poetry

Temperamental

This is for paint-chip poetry #33, and it was partially inspired by FDDA #20, since the temperament described in the poem is maybe an exaggeration of mine but closer to mine than I would like to admit.

Her emotions can go from happy to envious
More quickly than a wind gust.
She’s glad when someone else is accomplished,
Yet also wants the better end of
The wishbone, and of her many wishes.

If she begins to go off the deep end don’t forget
To breathe, get oxygen, take time for a lap swim.

Remember, in the garden, is basil green with envy
No; it helps the heirloom tomatoes to grow.

Now that I think about it, this poem also, in a way, reminds me of yesterday’s Gospel reading (Matthew 20:1-16), which ends with, “Or are you envious because I am generous?”

Carnival and a TV

The first poem is for FOWC: Finish and MLMM’s Sunday writing prompt: Carnival. The second poem is for FDDA day 16, about tv shows.

Say “Carne Vale” — finish all the meat!
Before the start of Lent, those 40 days.
But may these days with vice be not replete:
Let him not be a hypocrite, who prays
“Have mercy” during Wednesday’s austere Mass,
If Tuesday was a sinful, sick morass!

This next one is meant to be funny and quick, so I didn’t want to give it its own post.

Which t.v. show should I watch today?
On Netflix there are more than I can say,
But what is good, and what is utter crap?
So tired of browsing, I might take a nap!

Virtual and Mental Labyrinths

Today for FDDA, Fandango asks us to write about our daily routine. This is, thankfully, not a comprehensive list of what occupies my days! I’m posting this at the end of the day, so it might be too late.

These COVID times I daily find
My joy in staying mostly home.
I can’t find work of any kind,
So internet is where I roam.
I wander corridors of my mind
Soon to compose another poem.
To help me through I drink coffee —
Pandemic of insanity!

What Brings Me Joy

This is a day late for FDDA day 12, but it was also inspired by FOWC: Despondent. I consider myself a depressed optimist. 🙂

The morning sun’s rays through
The window as I write, relaxing —
Even if the day becomes
Mediocre, or taxing.
Even if I get despondent
Due to arguments or cancelled plans,
It gives me joy to contemplate
What substitutes are at my hands.
